Comprehensive Eye Care Marion, ILCan you imagine what life was like just fifty years ago? If you remember what it was like, doesn’t it seem like everything has changed? Technology has gifted us so many tremendous things in just the last fifty years. We can hop on a plane and fly across the world, talk to anyone at anytime with a cellphone, and consult the internet for our favorite recipes or facts to prove a point. We’ve come a long way.

But, just because we have some amazing tools and options at our disposal these days, doesn’t mean that there aren’t drawbacks. One of the largest inventions that has become an everyday necessity is the digital screen. And computer and cellphone screens emit blue light that can damage our eyes over time more than reading a book can do. Keep reading to learn about Digital Eye Strain and how to protect yourself from it.

What is Digital Eye Strain?

Also referred to as Computer Vision Syndrome, Digital Eye Strain refers to a conglomeration of issues that related to eye pain, such as fatigue, dry eyes, and blurred vision that results from looking at digital screens for extended periods of time. Your eyes have to refocus many times during the day when you work at a computer, and the blue light that comes from screens is also damaging. Imagine flexing one muscle for eight hours a day: that’s what staring at a computer screen is doing to your eyes. Your eyes need rest, and to vary the distance of focus.

How can I prevent Digital Eye Strain?

Try to limit the amount of time you spend looking at computer or digital screens whenever possible. We let cellphones take over aspects of our lives like looking for recipes or setting alarms. Limiting those functions can cut down on your screen time. Also, taking breaks to look out a window can help your eyes relax in between time spent on screens.
