Dr. Umana graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. He then did his residency in Ophthalmology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota before joining Marion Eye Center in 1989.

After several hands-on training, he started performing LASIK in 1998. He was the first in Southern Illinois to have a permanent laser installed.
Dr. Umana has performed over 15,000 LASIK procedures at the Laser Refractive Institute of Marion Eye Center. Besides LASIK, Dr. Umana also performs other procedures aimed to restore vision and/or reduce dependence on glasses or contact lens.

Implantable Collamer Lens – ICL to Evo ICL.

Dr. Umana has been providing this procedure since 2007. Proficient for patients with high nearsightedness or myopia.

Corneal diseases require surgical or medical treatments are routinely handled at the Marion Eye Center.

Dr. Umana performs DSAEK, DMEK and PKP (corneal transplants) and patients do not need to travel outside the area, providing convenience and excellent outcome closer to home.

The treatment of corneal and refractive conditions is changing rapidly and at the Marion Eye Center, with extensive experience and the most modern technology, we are able to treat conditions like keratoconus beyond contact lens and glasses. We are performing corneal cross-linking and CTAK for patients with Keratoconus.

Dr. Umana’s passion is international ophthalmology. Dr. Umana provides surgical and medical eye care and training in Nigeria, Liberia, and Mali. Through his career, Dr. Umana has conducted over 20 missions to these countries to satisfy his desire that vision is a gift worth giving.
