5 Tips to Prepare for LASIK Eye Surgery

Tuesday, March 15th, 2016, 4:39 am

LASIK eye surgery is a type of refractive surgery that effectively corrects common eye problems and lessens the need for prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. It’s also the most popular refractive surgery performed in the United States. If you’re looking to improve your vision with LASIK, here are five tips to help you prepare:

  1. 1. Wear Glasses, Not Contacts

5 Tips to Prepare for LASIK Eye SurgeryFor at least a week leading up to your LASIK procedure, you’ll need to go without contact lenses because they can distort the shape of your cornea and lead to inaccurate measurements. This can result in an ineffective outcome post-surgery. Switch to glasses during this time to allow your cornea to return to its normal shape.

  1. 2. Go Make-up Free

Your face and eyes will need to be rid of creams, perfumes, lotions and make-up on the day of your LASIK procedure to protect against possible infections. It’s also a good idea to thoroughly wash your eyes before surgery to help minimize debris that may be caught in your eyelashes and prevent the risk of infection.

  1. 3. Dress comfortably

You’ll want to be as comfortable as possible, so wear clothes that are loose-fitting and comfortable, so you can return home to rest without the need to change your clothes. And avoid wearing hair accessories that may interfere with your procedure as your head is positioned under the laser.

  1. 4. Arrange for Time Off

LASIK patients sometimes go back to work the day after their treatment, but it’s best to take at a least a couple of days off after your procedure to give yourself time to rest. Ask your surgeon about the length of time recommended for you to recover.

  1. 5. Don’t Drive Yourself Home

You’ll be in no condition to drive, as your vision will still be blurry and you may still feel the effects of the medicine given to you before surgery. Arrange for someone to drive you to and from your procedure.

Knowing how to prepare for LASIK eye surgery will not only put your mind at ease, but it will help you achieve great results and a trouble-free recovery.
