tear duct surgeryAt Marion Eye Center and Optical, we provide a wide range of treatments and services, including oculoplastic surgeries. Oculoplastic surgeries focus on the eyes, and may include treatments such as tear duct surgery.

What are the tear ducts?

The tear ducts are a special system in the eye that provides for proper drainage of tears from the surface of the eye. However, there are times when patients may experience problems with their tear ducts. This may include closure or obstruction that can greatly impact one’s eye health. When tear duct problems are diagnosed, some patients may require surgical intervention to restore the system’s proper functions.

What is a blocked tear duct?

Sometimes, patients may experience the blockage of the tear duct in one or both eyes. Blockage can obstruct the tear duct from functioning properly and can cause discomfort and poor tear drainage. Certain tests are used to diagnose a block in the tear ducts including tear drainage tests, eye imaging tests, and irritation and probing. These are used to determine if there is an obstruction. Once this has been discolored and properly diagnosed, the doctor can provide recommendations in regards to treatment.

What are treatments for blocked tear ducts?

Treatment for blocked tear duct will be determined due to the underlying cause. It may include:

  • Removal of tumors
  • Massage techniques to open the membranes
  • Dilation, probing and flushing
  • Prescription medications including oral pills or antibiotic drops
  • Balloon catheter dilation
  • Intubation
  • Stenting
  • Surgical intervention

Which treatment is right for me?

The doctors of Marion Eye Center and Optical may recommend different treatments for different patients. There is no “one size fits all” solution for tear duct obstruction, so a consultation and evaluation will help provide appropriate recommendations.
