What is diabetic retinopathy?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2020, 1:57 am

Patients who have been diagnosed with conditions such as diabetes will find that the management of their condition is of utmost importance. Diabetes can significantly impact many areas of one’s life, including their vision. Conditions such as diabetic retinopathy should be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible to manage the maintenance of one’s vision health.

What is diabetic retinopathy?

A large percentage of patients who have diabetes will experience diabetic retinopathy. This condition is serious as it can result in complete loss of vision. The doctors at Marion Eye Center and Optical provide patients with not only a diagnosis of their condition, but treatment options available. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when patients do not monitor and maintain their levels and experience damage to the blood vessels in the retina. This reduces the nutrients and oxygen to the retina which impacts overall retinal function. When this occurs, the body will naturally try to compensate by creating new blood vessels which are often weak and cause leaking of blood and fluid directly into the eye. Without proper treatment, this condition can be extremely damaging to one’s overall sight and vision health.

What are the symptoms of diabetic retinopathy?

There are a few common symptoms that patients with this condition will notice. If any of the following occur, it may be time to schedule a consultation appointment and initial evaluation with our professionals to obtain a proper, definitive diagnosis and seek appropriate treatment:

  • Increase in floaters and spots in the field of vision
  • Dark spots or empty areas within vision
  • Blurry vision
  • Poor night vision

During a screening, our doctors can determine if this condition is present and peak to a patient about the treatment options available to them. Treatment may include anything from medications to surgical interventions, and in some cases, laser-based procedures.
